What’s one of the first things you do when you plan your maternity session? You think “what in the heck am I going to wear?!?!” Right??? So then you google “what to wear for maternity session.” You will see tons of beautiful dresses and lots of rules about what to wear. I love having some rules to go by because it narrows things down, and there are usually some pretty good reasons for these “rules”.
One of the ones I see all the time is, don’t wear black to your maternity session, but why? Black is slimming, because it’s such a flat color it can make you look smaller and can slim any bumps that you want to minimize. During a maternity session though, we want to show off that very important bump! There are 2 sides to every coin right? If you have a dress you really love and it makes you feel great and it’s black you should still definitely wear it. We just want to make sure we still celebrate the bump.
Here is the trick to wearing black for your maternity session…ready? Just don’t have your husband/partner wear black. That’s really when it becomes a problem. When you have 2 people in black standing next to each other it and really hide your baby bum. So my recommendation is to have your husband just wear a different color. And below is an amazing example of how a black maternity dress can totally work and be stunning. I also usually recommend having 2 outfits for maternity. It’s great to have a little bit of variety. So for the second dress we rented a Fillyboo Wonder Years dress from Mama Bump Rentals.
I love this maternity session so much. I’ve photographer Morgan and Megan from their first maternity session to Caroline’s one year cake smash and now she is becoming a big sister! The best part of my job is celebrating these special times with my clients who have become friends.
