I know for some people the thought of doing a newborn session the within a week of your baby being born can be crazy overwhelming. But I take care of as much as possible. All we need is a little space, usually the living room or bedroom works just fine, and I bring and setup up the backdrop, props, headbands, knits- all tailored to the colors you want. Some new moms even have their mom come over for an hour to watch the baby. It’s a win-win. Grandma gets baby snuggles and you get time to take a shower and put some makeup on.

But besides being tired and busy with you new little one, sometimes there are more complications. Sometimes babies need a little extra time at the hospital. Sometimes momma need a little extra time at the hospital- and that’s totally ok. If that happens, and you and your baby are healthy and home around the 3-week mark, I recommend still having a newborn session. Something to think about is that older newborns are away more, so there will probably be less posing, and more wrapping. Wrapping not only calms the baby down, it also holds their arms and feet so if they are awake, they can’t fail around making it safer and more secure for them. You will still get beautiful images of your new baby!

If your baby is over a month old (and wasn’t a preemie) I recommend scheduling a session for 3 months old. At 3 months babies have better head control and eye contact. Plus, that is usually around the smiling milestone. So, you get those amazing smiles, and coos, and giggles. Here are some 3 month sessions to take a look at.

We did Evie’s session at about a month. Here momma had to spend some extra time in the hospital, and I’m so happy after that she was feeling a lot better, and that is ALWAYS the most important thing. Evie’s momma requested a couple things. She wanted a photos of her wrapped in her husbands uniform, like they had done their first girl, and she wanted to make sure we used flower/rose headbands since Evie’s middle name is Rose. I loved the request and thing they came out so special! Evie’s photos turned out beautiful! You could tell her big sister already loved her so much, and was such an awesome helper. I just loved spending time with this family and capturing their perfect little addition.
