Bath Splash – Monterey Baby Photographer

I’m going to tell you a little secret…ready…sometimes babies hate cake! I know right?!?! What wrong with them? And if you’re a mom and this has happened to you, I want to just let you know, your baby isn’t broken! After 5 years of doing cake smash I’ve come to find it’s a couple things. First, it can be extreme stranger danger. Second, it’s a texture thing. Some babies don’t like being sticky. Third, this is a totally new experience with them sitting on the floor and grownups clapping and making weird noises. Wouldn’t you be a little freaked out too? For more tips on how to prep for a cake smash check out this blog post.

While these tips can save the day, my back up plan ( which I guess isn’t really a backup cause I do it every session) is a bath splash! Babies know the bath, it’s not super new. It’s warm so they are comfortable. And gosh darn it they just like it! 🙂 Funny enough my babies that absolutely HATED the cake ( like looked at it and started screaming) LOVED their bath, and there are always smiles!

So now that I convinced you to always have a bath splash after a cake smash here are some tips for you photographers to do it in your studio. My current space has a shared bathroom down the hall. I like to save time and get the water before the session. Problem is that it will be cold ( or at least not warm) by bath time. Also carrying the full bath down the hallway going in and out 2 doors was not fun. My solution? A small cooler with wheels. This is the exact one I got. I also use a small plastic sand pale I got at the Target dollar spot. The bucket is so I can transfer the water from the small sink into the cooler and from the cooler to the bath without making a mess. You could use a cup, whenever you have lying around that will fit under the sink spout. For the water temp I make sure its exactly what I want it to be at bath time and the “cooler” keeps it the same temp. Plus since it has a lid and wheels it’s super easy to move around.

Because I’ll bet you a dollar everyone will want to know where the bath tub is from… click here.

*Tip- remind mom to bring an extra towel to dry baby off, and an extra diaper for after the bath.

  1. What a great idea and you’re right about a lot of babies hating cake!! My son was one of those kids. I think he hated getting his hands sticky. But a bath smash would be a great idea!! Great pictures!!
