One of the first things I do for a newborn session is wrap the baby. If there is an older sibling it’s easier for them to handle a wrapped baby, not to mention it keep newborns calm and content, and then I go through my work-flow from there. But there are a lot of other reasons you’ll want an assortment of wraps. You can use them traditionally to wrap the baby. You can also use them to add color and texture to your photos by layering them in props. I also use them as a “blanket” in my newborn prop bed and they work perfect.
I have 3 different wrap vendors that I basically use every session. For the base wrap I use The Indy Cottage’s milk wrap. It has this dual stretch and it’s the perfect length. Sometimes I use it alone but I always use it as the 1st wrap to keep babies nice and snug. Then I can put different wraps over the top.
For color wraps, I use jersey wraps, and my favorite vendor for those is Sew Trendy. You may know them for maternity dresses, but they also offer the same fabrics in wraps. I love that you can get coordinating wraps, and that they have so many colors, and even some really pretty patterns.
Lastly is Red Owl Photo Props, and I absolutely love her cotton wraps. They are amazing to wrap around baby, and they can also be used to add color a texture in a newborn prop like a bucket or crate. There are 3 different lengths. The double length is what I recommend if you’re going to use it for the potato sack wrap. It’s also a great length for buckets. I use the regular length for most of those things too, it just doesn’t give you quit as much extra fabric for the bucket ( but totally still doable).If it’s a color I don’t think I’ll use very often I do with this length too. Then she added a small square size, which is amazing! I especially love it as a layering piece, and again it’s a great idea if you’re buying colors you may not use all the time and it can add a lot of variety to your collection. For example, I don’t use red or green very often, but around Christmas time I really need it. So I bought the smaller red and green to add the colors into my setups.
