Monterey Newborn Photographer- The Baby Summit 2016

So, what is a baby summit? Lol! When I told my friends and family that I was going to The Baby Summit in Atlanta, that was the response I got from just about everybody. I would tell them basically it’s a photography conference focusing on newborn and baby photography. Some of them still didn’t get it, and didn’t get why I was flying from Monterey California all the way to the east coast!

Newborn photography is such a special field of photography. Sometimes I have to explain it like how doctors have specialties. You probably wouldn’t want your optometrist trying to remove your appendix, while both doctors are accomplished in their own fields you want a specialist who knows more about that specific area. I think it’s the same with photographers. There are so many special tips, tricks, and training that go along with being a posed newborn photographer. Many times I’ll tell other photographers what I do and they get this face like they are looking at a unicorn! They think it’s amazing that I have so much patience for what I do, but the reverse is true too. I have so much respect for what they, and the time and talent it takes to shoot a wedding, but neither one of us would want to trade places. And I think that is a true mark of you doing to right thing in your career-having patience and love for what you do.

Being a specialist in something means your constantly learning, and I love it. Sometimes it’s learning a new way to do something- a better way. Once in awhile it’s about learning something completely new, and with The Baby Summit I got to do both! I learned from some of the best in the industry. I got to see live newborn posing demos, and take workshops to help me run my business. My favorite classes were Kristen Mackey of Son Kissed Photography (who did a posing and editing class), and Sue Bryce. Sue Bryce is seriously the most amazing teacher. She is so inspiring. When I saw her on the class roster I basically didn’t care what she was teaching but I knew to sign up for every class I possibly could!

While watching the live newborn demos were amazing I think the biggest take away was all the business advice. There actually were a lot of think I was already doing, which was great cause I know I’m on the right track. But there are definitely thing sI needed to start doing or improve on. And I so excited to make a list and start tackling them one by one.

The inside of the hotel was pretty amazing! Is it silly I was impressed how fast the elevator went?!?!

Me and Kristen Mackey of Son Kissed Photography. Her posed newborn work is so amazing, and she was so sweet. I’m looking forward to mentoring with her one day.

Kelly Brown is the photographer and incredible woman behind this event! I took her workshop a few years ago in LA, and she remembered me!

I feel like it was all such a blur. I went from a packed work week of sweet babies and jumped on a plane, bless my husband for driving me to the airport at 5 in the morning. I got through the day with redbull to start and wine to finish 🙂 I’m already looking forward to hopefully doing it all over again next year! Till next year Baby Summit-cheers!

I wish I could’ve gotten to go to the Baby Summit this year and am so jealous of all the fun you got to have there. I could only imagine all of the booths of glorious newborn props lined up just waiting to be pillaged through! It looks like you got to meet some of the industry’s finest, too. Thanks for sharing your experience.
