A one year cake smash is the most messy fun you and your baby can have! You have both made it to the beginning of toddlerhood and I think we can all agree that deserves some frosting! They are always so much fun and here are some quick tips to make sure everything goes as well as it can!

Cake: Go with whipped or butter frosting. It’s easier for little finger to tear into. Also, make sure the cake sits out for a little while so it’s not too cold.

Practice: This is a big one! Remember your baby has just turned 1 and is still figuring out new taste and textures, and baby can be shy of trying new thing especially in a new environment. So I suggest having a trial run before the session. Get a cupcake with the same color icing as the cake and sit on the floor with your little one and let them have at it. You can even have a cupcake too. Every time I’ve had a parent do this it’s been a big success, and can help the babies really dig into their cake when the time comes!

Clean Up: Have paper towels and wet wipes on hand. I always do cake smashes on paper backdrops that can just be cut and thrown away, but things can still get messy so remember to dress yourself in clothes that can get covered in cake! You might have to wrangle a run-away cake covered baby after all. At the end it so much fun to do a bath splash. I bring a little tub and we stick your birthday cake covered baby in (maybe even add some bubbles) and they always have such good time. Sometimes babies even have more fun in the bath than with the cake!
