Monterey Newborn Photographer That Comes to Your Home

Many times the first questions clients ask me is “So, you will come to the house right?” Of course I will!!
I understand that new moms and dads are tired and the thought of leaving the house a week after your new little one comes home can be a bit daunting. I never realized, though, how many other reasons clients love for photographers to come to their house.

First of all they may have more kids. Most clients really love that I come to their homes for an in-home session when they have another little one running around that they would like to include in the session too. It seems to be really popular to have a 2 year gap between babies (at least that’s what I’ve noticed), and most moms dread the thought of trying to get a 2yr old to a studio.

Second, I learned that some religions don’t allow the mom to leave the house after giving birth for up to 40 days. I had never heard of this until I started being a newborn photographer. It’s actually quite interesting. The mom is suppose to rest at home, and give her body time to recover after giving birth.

Third (and this is probably the most common) is doctors telling mom not to take the newborn out of the house. I know plenty of photographers that use a studio, and I don’t really consider taking your newborn to a studio taking them out in public. Most photographers try to create a beautiful and safe environment for your little ones, but for some parents a session in their home is ideal.

Now there are many thing about a studio that I love. I have ALL my props available. I can keep my lighting setup. I know the space I’m working with. But being able to come into a clients home for a newborn session is always an amazing experience. Moms are at ease and have everything the baby needs, and they don’t have to pack anything. I can take my time with toddlers, and if they aren’t into the session at the beginning sometimes by the end they warm up.

For newborn photography sessions in clients homes, I talk to the parents about their style and what their goal is for the session before hand. We discuss the colors they have decorated the nursery in and if they are more vintage or modern and I bring a few props that go with their style as well as merge with my photography style.

Up to about 2 months ago I was relying on natural light, which also meant I could only use certain parts of a clients home. Eventually, I gave into studio lighting (I was scared of something new), and now I love it and won’t look back!! Now I can setup in most any room in the house which gives me so much more flexibility and consistency in my work. I even had a client the other day ask if she could see what images looked like from in-home session, because she loved the studio images I had on my website and was wondering if I could do the same in her home. I had to break it to her that about 95% of the images on my website were taken in clients homes! Haha, I consider that such a compliment. I mean, really that is my goal for the session in clients home to look no different than as if they had come to a studio.

I’ll leave you with some of my favorite images from recent sessions (all taken in the the clients homes).
